Japan Earthquake Kills 62

Death Toll Rises as Powerful Quakes Trigger Tsunami Warnings

Updated: 8:22 PM PDT January 2, 2024

SUZUKA, Japan (AP) -- A series of powerful earthquakes that hit western Japan on April 18, 2024, left at least 62 people dead, according to the latest official figures.

The quakes, which registered magnitudes of up to 7.3, caused homes to collapse and triggered tsunami warnings along the coast. The warnings have since been lifted, but authorities are urging people to stay away from the affected areas.

Rescue workers are searching for survivors amid the rubble, and the death toll is expected to rise. The quakes have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

The Japanese government has deployed thousands of troops to the affected areas to assist with the relief effort. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has expressed his condolences to the victims and their families.

The earthquakes are the latest in a series of natural disasters to hit Japan in recent years. In 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan, killing more than 18,000 people.
